Guest Blogger: The Right Reverend Philip Bradford

Onceandfuturefarmer is a bit under the weather today.  As a former colleague in small-scale agricultural endeavors, I was delighted to accept her offer to write a guest post about a passion of mine.

A darling represenation of a traditional bee skep from LePetitPoulailler on FlickrBees….and the calmness of life with the hive is a form of stark poetry to me.  The hive has a striking and honest relationship between Queen, drone and worker.  All must meet conditions man and nature have given access.  Out of balance, those conditions can spell the demise of a hive…and  resultant negative effect on our food stores.

This afternoon, I confirmed how universal a passion apiary study can be.  My usual blog beat is the love of motor sports…specifically, drag racing.  I rode shotgun along I-5 today with one Stormy Summer.  If that name sounds like it belongs to a retired Roller Derby Queen…well, it does!  Like myself, Stormy appreciates raw action and exultant competition.  We both need a sense of Yin and Yang.   When not thrill-seeking or lobbying for social justice, we both find solace on the homestead.  Stormy and her father have been members of our state beekeeping association for a generation.  Stormy, who is halfway to her Journeyman status as a ‘keeper, excitedly shared about her near-double output from her hives this past summer.  A great apple orchard enhanced the light, sweet honey she motored through over this past holiday season with her household, thanks to her coddled Italian Bees.

The joy of celebrating life with those we love using food from our own home is a great, shared passion.  Religion comes in all forms…spirituality speaks in a shared language of healing foods.  Extreme lifestyle enthusiasts like ourselves will always come home to simple pleasures.

If you would like to contact Reverend Philip Bradford, please so indicate in a comment; onceandfuturefarmer will forward it to him.
