About Me and this blog

Published by onceandfuturefarmer

Self reliance is a long standing personal goal of mine, regardless of my immediate environment.  I’ve lived all up and down the West Coast, on the dry side and the wet side, in apartments, “gentleman’s farms” (small acreage), on a quarter of a section in wheat country fifty miles from the nearest real store…in the forest and the high mountain desert.  I currently divide my time between a studio apartment I share with my significant other of nearly thirteen years a block off a major freeway, and my dearest friend’s acreage where she boards the bit of small livestock that still look to me.

Making the shift from living off-grid while developing a small piece of land to living in a studio apartment has been extremely difficult; I don’t think I’ll ever be comfortable being an apartment dweller. Tongue out  Many people are, tho, and there is a degree of self reliance that can be obtained even here.  Using and developing skills to bake one’s own bread, make one’s own pasta, canning summer’s bounty, growing as much food as a body can…all these things have everything to do with self reliance and can be practiced and polished in all sorts of living situations.   This blog is meant to encourage folks to engage in an attitude of self reliance to the best of their abilities and to whatever extent their current surroundings will support.
